SEO questions answered, with a tool for every check
Last reviewed and updated
The questions people actually ask about SEO, grouped by the part of the job they belong to, answered without hedging — and with the free tool that lets you verify each answer on your own pages.
Where an honest answer is “nobody can tell you that for free”, this page says so instead of showing an invented number.
1Getting started questions
How long does SEO take? For a new site, three to six months before rankings stabilise for anything competitive; a strong page on an established site can rank within days. Nothing about that is negotiable by working harder in week one.
Do I need to submit my site to Google? No. A crawlable site with internal links and a sitemap gets found. Submitting a sitemap in Search Console speeds up discovery but is not a requirement.
Is SEO still worth it with AI answers in the results? Yes — AI answers are assembled from indexed pages, so being the page they cite still requires the same crawlable, well-structured, factually specific content.

2Keyword questions
Do keywords still matter? The phrase matters, exact repetition does not. Use the term people search once in the title, once in an H1 or early paragraph, then write naturally about the topic.
What is a good keyword difficulty for a new site? Below 30. Above 50 you are competing with sites that have years of links behind them, and a longer, more specific version of the same phrase is the faster route in.
How many keywords per page? One primary phrase and its close variants. Two unrelated primary phrases means two pages.
What keyword density should I aim for? There is no target. Anything above roughly three percent reads as padding — check it, then stop thinking about it.

3On-page and content questions
How long should a title tag be? Under 60 characters so it is not truncated, with the phrase you want to rank for near the front.
Does the meta description affect rankings? Not directly — it affects the click-through rate, which is why it is still worth writing. Aim for 70–160 characters that promise what the page delivers.
Can I have more than one H1? Technically yes, practically no. One H1 states what the page is about; multiple H1s make that ambiguous.
Does duplicate content get penalised? There is no penalty, but duplicates compete with each other and search engines pick one. Consolidate with a canonical tag.

4Technical questions
Why is my page not indexed? In order of likelihood: a noindex meta tag, a robots.txt block, a canonical pointing elsewhere, no internal links to the page, or it is simply too new. Check the first three with tools — they take seconds.
Does site speed affect rankings? Yes, but as a tiebreaker rather than a primary factor. A page that responds in 300 ms and one in 900 ms rarely differ in position; three seconds versus 300 ms does.
Do I need HTTPS? Yes. It is a confirmed ranking signal and browsers warn users without it.
Do redirects lose link value? A single 301 passes almost all of it. Chains of three or more waste crawl budget and should be collapsed.

5Backlink and authority questions
How many backlinks do I need? There is no number. What matters is whether relevant sites link to you with descriptive anchors — five links from sites in your field beat five hundred from directories.
Should I buy links? No. Paid link networks are the most reliably detected manipulation in search, and recovering from a manual action costs more than the links ever returned.
Do nofollow links help? Indirectly. They pass no ranking signal but do bring traffic and often precede editorial links from readers who found you through them.
Why can nobody show me my real domain authority for free? Because authority scores are proprietary models owned by SEO data vendors. ToolForge verifies links it can fetch and confirm instead of showing an invented number.

6Measurement questions
How often should I check rankings? Weekly. Daily checks mostly capture normal fluctuation and lead to reacting to noise.
What is a good SEO score? Above 75 means the fundamentals are in place. Below 45 usually means something structural: a missing viewport, a noindex directive, thin content or almost no internal links.
Why do my rankings differ from what I see in my own browser? Personalisation, location and search history. Checks that read a clean result set report the same position consistently.
What should I fix first? Whatever is failing in the technical pillar. A page that cannot be crawled or indexed gains nothing from better content.
