Meta tag tools compared: generators, checkers and preview tools
'Meta tag tool' covers three different jobs that are easy to confuse: writing the tags, verifying the tags already on a page, and previewing how a shared link will render.
Generators: for writing the tags
A generator takes your title, description, canonical and social fields and emits the exact HTML block to paste into the head. Its value is completeness — it will not forget twitter:card the way a hand-written block does.
Checkers: for auditing what is live
A checker fetches a URL and reports what is actually there: duplicate titles, over-length descriptions, a canonical pointing at the wrong page. This needs a network fetch, so it is a server or provider-backed job rather than a purely local one.
Preview tools: for the share card
Previews render the og:title, og:description and og:image the way a social platform would. Remember that platforms cache aggressively: after changing an image you may need to force a refresh in that platform's link preview debugger before the new card appears.
Length limits worth respecting
Titles are truncated around 55–60 characters and descriptions around 155–160. Search engines rewrite descriptions often, so treat yours as a strong suggestion rather than a guarantee — and never leave it empty.
